An Independent Fashion Revolution Meets Little Independent

A few months ago I was doing some research on the fashion community in Chicago. As a city, they have so many resources that can be used to help you learn and grow not only in Chicago but anywhere.

I happened upon an awesome amazing wonderful site called Little Independent. Of course this attracted my attention since our whole life over here revolves around our own tag line: an independent fashion revolution. I thought it was just meant to be that I found this site.

As I perused their site the more excited I got (I'm weird I know and I'm okay with that)! It is so nice to come across people and concepts that are in line with what your own thoughts and passions are but with an individual twist that only the creator could have thought of.

That creator happens to be Lesley Tweedie, Co-Founder and Owner of Little Independent. See her in action HERE as she explains all about her "baby". She and her husband founded Little Independent in 2010. Their inspiration? A lonely Bike Helmet!

Their web site tells their story like this: "My husband and I own a neighborhood bike shop in Chicago. Over the course of many months, we watched a bike helmet gather dust on the sale rack. We marked it down…then marked it down again. We showed it to customers we thought might like it. We put it out for the sidewalk sale. The helmet still wouldn’t sell. Sure, it was a bit over-sized and more expensive than others, but I knew someone out there would be happy to have it for a great price. I wished there was an easier way to reach that person.

I found fellow storeowners have the same issue. Even those that have e-commerce websites sometimes find themselves with an item that lingers too long. The available listing websites where I could reach a wider audience had high fees and complicated set-up processes. There was no inexpensive and simple-to-use online marketplace just for independent stores like mine."

What an awesome simple logical concept!!! Breathing new life into an item that was destined for the clearance bin or even worse- having to bring it into my own home - because it wouldn't sell :) As Lesley said there had to be someone out there who was a perfect match for her helmet and she came up with a way to provide an invaluable service.

Independent retailers don't have the same luxuries or the financial freedom of large retailers like Saks or Lord & Taylor when it comes to sell through. Most independent retailers also sell one-of-a-kinds or unique items that take that one special person to come across it and fall in love or fall in need with it. Little Independent makes it easier for you, as a consumer, to get those items across state lines without leaving your own town. It keeps the integrity of the independent retailer while giving it a helping hand.

As of today Little Independent has 69 stores in 14 states with 239 sale items just waiting for YOU!! They are growing by leaps and bounds so be sure to check their site frequently to get some incredible finds at incredible prices.

May I add that Lesley happens to be such a wonderful person and knows what great customer service is and how people should be treated! For that, success is the only option for Little Independent because it comes from a good heart :)

"Doing" Vintage

There has been a change of tide lately with the economy theway it is and people wanting to find comfort in the simple things again. This is why, I believe, shopping for vintageanything (but especially clothing) has made a rather large resurgence.

Along with yearning for the nostalgia of yesteryear findingvintage pieces is like finding hidden treasure. Finding beautiful pieces with tags still attached – oh I just felt myblood pressure rise – such a rush!! Evenif I don’t buy it for myself there is no way I’m leaving an incredible vintagefind behind – I know someone who would look awesome in it or I will use it fora photo shoot before I walk away from something so fantastic!

For one, things were just made better in certain eras thanthey are now. The material may not havebeen wonderful (polyester I’m talking to you) but the craftsmanship wasimpeccable. Things that were lessexpensive and not considered couture at the time were even made better thantoday.

I have searched through manydefinitions of “vintage clothing” and the most common theme seems to be asAbout.com defines it: “The term vintageis used to describe clothing between 20 and 100* years old which is clearly representativeof the era in which it was produced. Vintage clothing can be used, new (from dead stock), manufactured, and handmade. It is important to understand that thedefinition of vintage is fluid, so every decade brings forth new items as"vintage". It is also important to understand that all vintage willeventually become antique. *Clothing100 years old or more is classified as antique” Something to think aboutwhen consciously going out to search for a vintage piece or pieces.

Doing vintage is fun and addsto your own personal style. I talk a lotabout personal style but it is important to express yourself through what youwear and how you wear it. It is anoutward expression of what’s going on inside – some days that’s good and somedays not so good – but nevertheless it’s the truth.

I view vintage as I do atrend. Meaning that I wouldn’t do atrend from head to toe – I strategically mix and match it and several piecesthroughout my wardrobe or outfit. If youfind an awesome vintage dress then mix it with some sky high platforms to makeit modern. If you layer yourself invintage jewelry like pearls and rhinestones, then wear it with a white tank topand denim and, again, a hot shoe, to offset the fanciness of the jewelry. The trick to “doing vintage” is to do a piecehere and do a piece there. If done allat once it can look as though your grandmother’s (or great-grandmother’s)closet imploded all on one person and we don’t want that (unless you are doinga period piece in the theaterJ.)

It is also important to doyour research. In the age of smartphones and tablets it makes it easier to find out on the spot if the deal youthink you’re getting at the thrift store is truly a bargain. If I come across a label I am unfamiliar withI will do a search right there in the store – sometimes it’s good and sometimesnot but it is important to be informed. If there is a dress that isn’t a popular name but I really love it andit’s $5.00 then I go for it and tweak it to my own personal taste. That’s the beauty of it – you buy somethingfor $5.00 and make it look like $500 and no one is the wiser. It’s all in how you carry yourself and theconfidence you exude in anything you wear.

Let’s recap:

· Do vintage in moderation – a piece here and a piece there

· Make vintage modern by pairing it with classic pieces oftoday (denim, platform shoes, blazers, that little black dress, or the classicwhite oxford)

· Have fun when picking out pieces. It’s easier to try something if it costs$5.00 than if it costs $100.00 so go for it!

· There are no rules when it comes to your personal style.

· Do your research – look up unknown labels or fashionhouses just so you know what you are buying – especially when it comes to highend couture vintage pieces (e.g. Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, etc.)

Vintage pieces can be found just about anywhere: Goodwill , Salvation Army, your local thriftshop, your family’s closets, your friends’ family’s closets, and garage andestate sales. There are also somecompanies who have made upscale vintage their livelihood and only sell high enddesigners and fashion houses for a pretty penny but they are worth everycent!

Rockin' the Red Pump

We urge all bloggers and everyone to join us in the Rock the Red Pump campaign this year. They are now in their 4th year and have made incredible strides in raising awareness for Women and Girls affected by HIV/AIDS.

The Red Pump Project raises awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. Our mission is to promote HIV prevention through education, and open dialogue about the issues that surround sexual and reproductive health. We do work online and on the ground to motivate action and encourage dialogue about the effects of the disease.

Founded in March 2009 by Luvvie Ajayi and Karyn Watkins, Red Pump believes that if HIV affects one, it affects us all. We use the red shoe as a symbol of empowerment to represent the strength and courage of women infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The incorporation of fashion into the message of HIV prevention is our contribution as we hope to show that Awareness is Always in Style!™.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is March 10th every year, and there’s a whole lot of talking and educating happening all over the country in honor. That’s how The Red Pump Project was born… Out of our desire to get conversation started on the issue of HIV/AIDS and ask others to do the same. So we put out a call for bloggers to “Rock the Red Pump™.”(thanks ladies for letting me borrow from your web site :)

ERAS by ADSH - Launched

As some of you may or may not know we have launched a vintage subsidiary of our company called ERAS by ADSH. This is an exciting venture for us because we love to mix unexpected pieces and find hidden fashion treasures in our city and beyond.

ERAS by ADSH began after an amazingly lucky thrifting day. The more we found the more we knew we had to share it with everyone. There are pieces that just CANNOT be left and they must be shared. We found all shapes, sizes, fabrics, colors, and ERAS - hence our name!! One thing that sets us a part from the rest is that we choose only the best most high quality vintage pieces (with some brand new up to date items thrown in because we just couldn't resist). If there is something that needs fixed to make it perfect again then we fix it. We take pride in selling quality products and customer service is #1!!

We also come across items that were made in huge design houses and also some little known ones and try to resurrect the piece so it is relevant today. The best reward is following our pieces to galas, proms, corporate offices, museum openings, and onto the streets of America and internationally.

I'm a sucker for a new show having the premise of fashion. Being a fashion services company ourselves I feel I need to latch on and support anything pertaining to my industry. Yes, I have three daughters as well so ABC Family is a channel that we watch often. To my cheerful surprise there is a new show premiering TONIGHT (Tuesday, January 3rd 9/8c) that we all can watch together - Jane By Design!

Spring Showcase 2012

The Aesthetic Design Style House Spring Showcase 2012 took place on December 10, 2011. This was an "industry only" event and invitees were fashion professionals with credentials.

A showcase differs from a fashion show and that is fact #1. A showcase is just that - an event to "showcase" designers and their collections for buyers to purchase. It is an up close and personal way for fashion professionals to buy in a setting conducive to finding items for their organizations that fit their clients best. This way one is able to inspect craftsmanship, feel fabric, and get a first-hand impression of the designer and their collection. Models are placed strategically throughout the space and are expected to know who they are wearing and a bit about the piece they have been lucky enough to be chosen to wear.

A Fashion show usually involves a runway presentation and has a short time frame for which the show begins and ends. Models are sent walking down a catwalk (in one aspect or another) and are used as a "hanger" for the collection in which they are showing. Attendees are lined up usually 2 to 3 rows deep along the edge of the runway or catwalk. There are media, buyers, and fashion professionals in the audience along with moms, dads, friends, family, etc. You hope you are able to catch the attention of one of the aforementioned fashion professionals in order to get your collection into the hands of the right store or stores. There is no up close and personal unless you have been invited backstage before the models run out of the clothes.

We carefully chose the showcase option because independent fashion has more to prove, unfortunately. Meaning we have to work harder to show that we are just as good (or in some cases BETTER) than large world renowned fashion houses. Showing someone quality is always better than telling them about it. They must be able to see for themselves and that is exactly what a showcase is able to do.

Now, we are headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana and this whole showcase thing was baffling to some. Even the models were a little confused as to what we were doing and what we were trying to attain. Once the "waiting game" and the hair/make-up portion was over everything came together and the vision came to life. Now, a showcase isn't as action packed (at times) as a runway show so for some they aren't sure how to act or interact for that matter. A showcase is all about business and there is one main purpose that one attends - to buy new collections for their organization. There are all sorts of ways to present a showcase and we have learned so much from our first one. They can be fun but keep in mind we do this for the business side of fashion.

Don't get me wrong - I am a sucker for a good runway presentation. They are fantastic and they have their place in the industry. However, the showcase has it's place but doesn't get enough credit for all it accomplishes.

We were lucky enough to have some amazing people who believed in us and what we were trying to do: Peachtree Hotel Group, Barr Display, LModelz, Halakar Property Management, Angiee's Kitchen, Little Independent, PATTERN, Re-Creations by Christopher Thompson, Anna Ziemniak Photography, Marceli Chase Photography, and Karen Stewart Works. These individuals and organizations worked hard to help promote and also lend their vision to our event and to them we are undoubtedly grateful!!

And of course we have the GREATEST team on the planet who helped to pull it all off as well. Believe me we all had our own separate small breakdowns at one point or another in the planning process but we brought it all together in the end - that's what a great team does :)

This was a learning process and we are so excited how it all turned out. We truly were blessed with fantastic press and exposure for our designers. On top of that we had many orders and at the end of the day that was the goal!!

Goodwill for Goodwill ~

How many of you love to spend less and get more? Yes, I am definitely one of those people wholove to get a bang for my buck and I especially love the Goodwill!

I have been shopping at the Goodwill for years and come tofind out I am now not the only one! Goodwill used to be the fun place to go with grandma to try on the mostridiculous outfits you could find, but now it is out with the old and in withnew.

Recent articles that I have stumbled upon have stated thatnow, more than ever, the ratio of retail customers has risen 56% in the pastthree years. The people who have been donors in the past are now Goodwill’sgreatest shoppers.

Not only has the recession helped Goodwill’s success, butthe enhancements to their ad campaign for the store have created a fashionablelook for shoppers. Goodwill is now able to offer some name brands and some ofthe newest trends - the hunt is just abonus.

If you are in Central Indiana Goodwill has launched a new boutique store concept located at 422 East Kirkwood Avenue, Bloomington, Indiana 47408 called Vintage Vogue at GW. It is a first of its kind and has had an incredible outpouring of support. Here is their mission statement : "Brace yourself for a brand new shopping concept with the opening of Vintage Vogue by GW. A boutique brand of Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana, Vintage Vogue offers a unique blend of chic, modern fashions and one-of-a-kind classics. The merchandise for Vintage Vogue is made possible by the generous donors in central Indiana. With the support of retail shoppers and donors, revenues generated from Vintage Vogue and all the other Goodwill retail locations help fund employment and educational services in central Indiana for young people and adults.

Goodwill now has its own blog to learn about and comment onthe new trends!

Reflection: Race Relations in the Indianapolis Fashion Industry

Indianapolis is one of the most segregated cities in the Midwest. I've come to terms with that...really I have. I grew up in a world where there was no color. People gasped at me when I brought a white man home to visit my family. What did your family say? Say about what?!?! Well....you know about Jason being white? Umm...my family didn't say anything. I don't think they even noticed. I've been in love with every race there is...I'm an equal opportunity lover. (I haven't dated an Asian though, need to fill that void...no really just kidding!) And it's not that I'm naive about race, hatred, and exclusion; it's out there and it's stronger than ever. I just try not to let it rule my life.

This time last year, I decided to follow a dream of mine and work in the fashion industry here in Indianapolis. I didn't know much about our fashion scene, but I knew one was out there. So I started researching to see where I would fit in. I have met so many new and exciting people since I've started to surface among the scene. Too many people to name...but you know who your are. I've also learned of many catty fights and division in the ranks. What do you expect? It is fashion...the mother of all cattiness, but I didn't expect any racial division. I don't know why, it's Indianapolis.

In Indianapolis, we have the black clubs and the white clubs...black stores and the white stores...black salons and white salons. Now don't get me wrong...there are some people of both races that break the mold. They don't follow the status quo and visit places that cater toward the opposite race. But the fashion industry....really?

I saw on Facebook last week a boycott against Midwest Fashion Week because it's founder, a Haitian male has been accused of purposely not promoting African American models and/or designers, because he's ashamed of his African heritage. I was floored, because this same issue was on the tongues of some when the Indianapolis Fashion Collective started. Many people said the organization was full of elitist and didn't want to particpate because they saw no representation of color within the ranks or there was no representation from IFC at the "black" fashion events. STOP PEOPLE!

Are people being too touchy? Are people looking for something to bitch about or does the Indianapolis fashion industry have a problem with color? I think certain people do, we cannot change the ignorance of those who choose to walk down a path of intolerance. But what we can do is support each other, whether that person, model, designer, photographer, or corporation is black or white or any other ethnicity or creed. Let's stop focusing on and fueling the color line, but lets step over it. Because Indianapolis is filled with talent from all sides; just think if we truly all came together and worked on making Indy the new fashion hub of the Midwest. We would be unstoppable.

ADSH Promo Shoot - COMPLETE

Back on a hot hot hot day in August of 2011 the Aesthetic Design Style House team took on the task of directing, producing, styling, make-up (ing), and hair do (ing) out own Photo Shoot. With the AMAZING vision of Anna Ziemniak behind the lens it all fell together beautifully! The shoot was relaxed and we just let it all flow which I believe made it as awesome as it was.

Janelle Cissell and I worked on the direction part and also filled in as Hair Stylist and MUA. We had Sasha Greene and KathRyn Lou as models with Mallory Thomas joining us in a pinch toward the end. Amber Fitzgerald and Mallory Thomas (our summer interns) had the opportunity to style our shoot for up close experience.

I'm going to let her tell you a little more about herself in her own words. Take it away Amber!

Hello, my name is Amber Coryell and I am 23 years old. Since I have been old enough to care what myclothes looked like I have been crazy about fashion. I love mixing and matching and making thingsmy own and I wanted to make that my career.

I took up the hobbyof sewing when I was in high school because I wanted to learn how to make myideas into reality. I love the idea oftaking something so simple, like fabric, and the outcome of it becomingsomething completely different. In my freetime I have made or modified many things and found myself jumping into manyprojects just for the learning and experience.

When I went into my last years of high school I did a lot ofresearch to learn about how to follow my dreams in this field and I learned notonly is it going to take a lot of time and determination but, a lot ofmoney. Art school was not cheap, so Idecided to go to school to get my business degree. I decided to get this degree not only becauseit could help me gain more knowledge in the business aspect, but help me get abetter job to pay for the school I really wanted to go to.

I have received my degree and I am in the process oftransition, but in doing so I thought about trying to gain more knowledge aboutthe fashion industry. I decided I wantedto do this before I start school again so I could go in with a little moreinsight on both sides. I was not surehow I was going to do this without any experience or an art degree under mybelt, but I was determined so I just started emailing businesses, companies,stores, anything I could to see if they would let me intern. In doing so I finally got the response I washoping for and I am so excited to have gotten this chance!! I cannot wait toget started!

Fashion Night Out Indianapolis

Master of Transformational Reconstruction

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and taking some time in this heat to get cool. This week I wanted to talk about a new method of draping I learned about. Transformational Reconstruction is a form of draping in which there are no side seams, shoulder seams, or darts. Shingo Sato is a master of this technique and released a book not too long ago titled the same, Transformational Reconstruction by Shingo Sato, which also has a great DVD of Sato demonstrating his process.

TR is a fun and creative method of creating very one of a kind pieces. I suggest everyone who is a designer and loves to sew should try this method. Youtube is a great source to get started. There are many many videos of not only Shingo Sato but other designers demonstrating in detail this technique. Enjoy!

English Sensibility

Hello everyone!

It’s so nice to be back from England. I had an absolute blast while I was there and made so many new friends that I am going to miss. While I was in England I spent most of my time in Ilkeston and Nottingham, but my friend and I did manage to make it to London for a few days. While we were there I saw so many interesting people wearing what I can only describe as chic all the time. So, of course I became a bit of creeper and just started taking photos of people in outfits I thought were interesting. One thing I did notice in London besides the womens fashion being incredibly forward was that men were also almost always dressed just as well as the women. It wasn’t just in London either, every part of England the men weren’t afraid to be bold with their fashions. It was very refreshing to see.

The first two photos that I took were at the train station from Derby going into London. Both of these men have very different styles but both look very put together.

The third picture I have posted was in London and it’s the girl on the far left with the “harem” pants that caught my eye. I saw these pants in nearly every store I went to. Also, notice the brightly colored socks she’s wearing with her shoes, the man in red in the last photo did the same thing. New trend?

While in England and particularly London, it was a bit chilly. When the sun is out you feel a bit hot but as soon as it disappears you feel the chill. Scarves, boots, and jackets where definitely items you wanted to keep handy. These three photos show different ways I saw scarves and boots worn.

The last picture I have posted is just for fun. While I was in England there was a show that my friend show me that is similar to our Jerry Springer/Maury called called the Jeremy Kyle show. This show was interesting to me because I was told the only people that really went on the show were called “Chavs.” A chav, according to my English friends, is a person who wears mainly track suits. After being told this anyone wearing a track suit caught my eye and I looked to see how they wore it differently than others.

These are just a few of the fashions I saw in England and I can’t wait to go back to see more.

What woman doesn’t look gorgeous in white lace? This trend can be found in tops, bottoms, undergarment, handbags, even shoes! White lace has a way of making women look elegant and polished; every woman needs lace alone in their wardrobe.

5) Kitten Heels

Girls, give your feet a break from those stilettos. Instead, put on a shorter heel known as the kitten heel. Although it doesn’t give the height that most women prefer, its simple yet elegant look can add glamour to any wardrobe.

It is officially SUMMER! At least that is what it feels like to me. I finished all my finals for school today and I leave for England in two days, definitely feeling the warm weather now. The biggest thing in fashion during the summer holidays is always the dreaded bathing suit.

A bathing suit can either make you a goddess in the sun or a fashion no no under the umbrella. Here are the latest trends in bathing gear to keep you hip and running for the sun instead of away from it.

Mallory Speaks

Hello Fashionistas! My name is Mallory Thomas and I’m proudly one of the new interns for Aesthetic Design Style House. I’m currently attending Ball State University and majoring in Apparel Design. I’m excited to say I’ll be graduating next month and looking forward to what life has to offer.

About me: I’m a small town girl born and raised in Rochester, Indiana. I’m the middle child of three girls and have such an amazing and supporting family.

Why Fashion? I’ve always had a love for fashion ever since I was in elementary school. During class while others were scribbling on the side of their paper, I was sketching what I thought was going to be my first line. Little did I know, I was going to be creating my first small line in college. Here’s a little peak of a few of my garments I’ve created that were inspired by the Hamptons.

Inspirations: I am inspired by my environment, street fashion, and celebrities… just to name a few. In my free time, besides designing and sketching, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, shopping, and listening to music.

Goals: Fashion has a great impact on the world today, it’s everywhere you look and my goal in life is to create garments that make others feel good about themselves while still getting to express their personalities.

I’m looking forward to learning more about ADSH and all of the wonderful and talented Designer’s, Stylist’s, Model’s, and Photographer’s that make this such a wonderful company to intern for and represent.

Even though our girls didn't win the main prize, a $1000 scholarship and sewing machines and accessories from sewing machine manufacturer, Baby Lock, they're still winners in our family. Congratulations ladies, we hope to see great things from you in the future.

The Interns Take Over ADSH!

This week begins our Intern Takeover of our blog! Enjoy the next few weeks with a fresh perspective on all things fashion from the inside out. Without further ado MEET AMBER!

I am so excited to have this opportunity to be working with Julia and her team. I just know that I am going to be learning so much from this experience, and my hope is to use all of it to help better my career in the fashion industry.

My name is Amber and I am a junior about to be a senior at the Art Institute of Indianapolis. My interest in fashion didn’t come about until I took a sewing class my sophomore year of high school. I really loved creating pieces and learning new stitches to put garments together. It fascinated me. Fashion is all about expressing yourself and telling a story, just like any other art form. I originally wanted to go into costume designing for theatre and film, because I have a love of history as well. Now, I’m not so sure that is what I want to do forever. I still have a huge interest in costuming and if the opportunity presented itself I would still love to dabble in it, but there are so many other aspects of fashion I enjoy now to.

A little about my background: I’ve grown up in Indianapolis all my life. I’ve lived in Carmel since I was 7 and before that the Pike area. I have a big family with 3 sisters and 3 brothers that I try to spend as much time with as I can. I went to Carmel High School and graduated in ’09. Other than sewing I enjoy yoga, Pilates, church, cooking, reading, and writing. I am also a music lover of all types of music. I am big into supporting the Indianapolis music scene and try to go to as my shows in the area that I can. I take every opportunity I can to travel. I’ve only been to a few of the states like California, Florida, Arizona, and Tennessee. Out of the country I’ve been to Aruba, which is beautiful, and in a few short weeks I’ll be traveling to England. I’ll be sure to share all about my experience there.

This is just a little bit about me. Again I can’t express how excited I am to be interning for Aesthetic Design Style House and all the experiences I will be learning from them.

We want to take a moment to welcome our fabulous Interns we are lucky to have for the summer - Mallory and Amber!!

Over the next few weeks they will be learning all there is to know about the "other" side of fashion and how things run. Public Relations and Marketing along with the Designer/Boutique and wholesale side should make them well rounded as they journey back to their schools this fall.

One of their assignments is to write for our blog. They will be taking turns throughout their tenure here writing for and tending to our blog. This will, in turn, help them build confidence in themselves and their fashion writing abilities. We look forward to what they come up with and their fresh perspectives - be sure to tune in.

Also, along the way they will be sharing about their experiences about being an Intern and about working in the fashion industry in general.

The Green Dress That Made The Day!

When Julia first told me about helping out with the Pike Prom Closet, I was excited. We had just finished with a job that took a lot of time and effort. I was looking for a small break, but I was ready to jump at the bit to help these young girls go to prom.

I never went to prom. The cost and boyfriend drama prevented me from attending the most special day in a woman's life; well besides marriage. I know you've heard the urban legends, you miss prom and you miss a piece of your life. I know how these girls feel, so I felt it was my duty to make sure our dress drive was a success. I pulled out my bag of tricks and stayed on my knees praying for the last two months.

All the praying and worrying was well worth it, especially in our third hour. A young lady named Allysa came to visit us with her mother and sister. They had been walking the Broad Ripple strip for some time and finally found us. Allysa was decked out in her soccer clothes. Her mom said she had been playing all day, but wanted to take the time out to look for a dress for prom. The six of us dug in all of our donations both at the shop and in Julia's car, and picked out some perfect picks for Allysa. Allysa tried every dress, but when she stepped out in this green rhinestone encrusted ombre dress, the tears just flowed. Six women standing in the middle of the street crying; watching a mother see her baby as a grown woman. This green dress made all the phone calls and emails, all the mean people, and all the headaches worth it! We made a new friend that day and we are waiting for prom pictures from Allysa next week.

I want to thank Rain Boutique's Brittney, for allowing us to set up at her shop. Even though she was going through a rough morning, she stayed and allowed us to hang out with her all day. Tough Time Blues

I don't know if it's the weather or just the time of year, but EVERYONE is chatting about how they're in a slump, both creatively and financially. Sometimes you need to just sit back and re-evaluate the goals of your company and brand. Here are a few topics that can help you start that process.

Who are you making you pieces for?
Most people make their pieces for themselves. People that do this don't sell their pieces. You have to design from inner creativity, but you need to keep in mind your target audience.

Who is sitting in the audience at your fashion shows?
It's great that you are participating in fashion shows. But if your line is ready to wear and no one is buying your pieces after your showcase, what was the point? Make sure you are targeting people that are going to buy your pieces. It's great to do a showcase for the public, friends and family, but your grandmother already purchased her couture X dress. Make sure you're filling the seats with potential clients and customers. Make your pieces available for purchase after the show.

The economy is crazy. Price your pieces accordingly.
Last night, we had a meeting with a designer. It was such a somber meeting because we had to reduce some of the prices of her pieces. THAT SUCKS!! We have to be mindful of the economy.With gas prices soaring, people are going to start locking their money up again to pay for extra expenses. Make your pieces economically friendly.

Halston Heritage Collection

It has come to my attention that HALSTON is my favorite designer of all time. And in saying this I realize I have alienated many fabulous designers in the process - BUT for me personally he was the BEST. I would literally wear every single piece he ever created and it would be an honor to feel it on my body - YES it's that deep!

In my research of Roy Halston Frowick I found out that there is probably an unconscious reason I love him so - besides the point of knowing every curve of a woman's body and being completely ahead of the fashion trends - he also has some Indiana ties. He was born a Midwesterner in Des Moines, Iowa but he did graduate from high school in Evansville, Indiana and he attend Indiana University for one semester - we should be honored! In 1952 he moved to Chicago and attended school of the Art Institute of Chicago and the rest is history. In an unambiguous way fashion is born so genuinely here in the Midwest and along with Halston we can't forget about our other success story in Bill Blass (but that's another post altogether).

The company Halston founded had it's ups and downs to say the least. I remember my mom being so excited that he signed a licensing agreement with JCPenney so she could buy some of his line for her own collection. You have to understand how HUGE this was because my mom hates to shop so for someone like Halston to have that sort of affect on her was of enormous proportions! With those licensing agreements and so many collections demanded of him, the selling of his name to Norton Simon Industries in 1973, and the firing from his own label in 1983 there was much controversy surrounding this amazing figure who single-handedly changed fashion (hello - the Pill Box Hat made for Jackie Kennedy!!!).

“Halston had the strongest influence in fashion early in the decade, when he helped bury the wild, anti-establishment look of the 60's, with its gypsy colors, fringed leathers and tie-dyed fabrics. He introduced the more sober clothes that women were ready for.” —Lisa Belkin The New York Times

His magic was lost for awhile and the whole reason for his being had seemed to be forgotten about by most. The company has had at least eight different owners and six different designers since that time.

Enter Fall 2011 and the HALSTON HERITAGE COLLECTION designed by no other than Sarah Jessica Parker. The resurrection of this line is one of the best play on Halston's vision and the merging of modernity I've seen. You look at it and know it's Halston but there's a slight twist thrown in that makes it right now! Finally, I feel, ol' Roy would be very proud ~

Transformations Fashion Show

Friday night, I saw an awesome show. Transformations is an annual show designed and produced by Catherine Fritsch for DivaFest.

Fritsch is owner and designer of Mercurious Designs and Sweet Revenge Lingerie. She has 18 years experience in designing, pattern making and sewing services. In my book, she is the one of the gurus of design AND she is one of the most humble and nicest person you will ever meet. She's also one of our clients at Aesthetic Design Style.

In the Transformation show, Fritsch takes off the wall objects, like styrofoam from bean bag chair and balloons, to make modern Victorian pieces. Models were supplied by LModelz Modeling Agency. Makeup was done by our own Julia Rutland and Christopher Thompson of Re-Creations and Kathy Moberly of faces by klm. Hair styling was provided by Geneva Hair Studio and jewelry by Cheeky Couture.

I was excited all week about this show. Here are a few of my favorite.

The Pike Prom Closet

Aesthetic Design Style is asking for your help in providing dresses, shoes, and accessories for the Pike High School Prom Closet.

This project began two years ago and is sponsored by the Pike High School chapter of the National Honor Society, student leader Chasmine Anderson, and Advisor Ms. Brea Thomas. The Pike Prom closet is open to the entire community and is an avenue for girls to get a beautiful outfit for prom or graduation without having to spend a lot of money-making it affordable to enjoy this special time in their lives. Girls are able to go into the Pike Prom Closet and pick out a dress for $15, shoes for $5, and accessories for $2. All proceeds from the sales go to the Women Like Us Foundation (www.womenlikeusfoundation.org) who then devotes those funds to rebuilding a school in Costa Rica.

The Pike Prom Closet is in need of dresses and shoes in all styles and sizes. Any accessories are welcome and are a nice addition as well. If you are a designer, a boutique, or someone who has an over- abundance of dresses they would like to donate please give us a call to schedule a pick up. We will, personally, pick up your donations wherever you may be. We even accept donations via mail so email me for our address (Julia@aestheticdesignstyle.com) if you would prefer that option.

The Pike Prom Closet is open Tuesdays at Pike High School located at 5401 West 71st Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268, Room L105, from 2:30pm – 4:30pm.

Breaking the Mold: Tracy Reese

Tracy Reese was born in Detroit, MI in 1964. She graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York in 1984.

Answers.com says, "Tracy Reese ranks as one of the fashion industry's most successful African-American women whose realm is not relegated to the runway."

Reese started working with Martine Sitbon and for a fashion label called Arelquin Reese right out of Parsons. Reese was a designer for Magaschoni, Perry Ellis and designed an exclusive line for The Limited. The designer started her own company in 1998 and has two labels; Tracy Reese and Plenty. In 2004, the designer started a home goods line called Plenty Home.

The designer has also collaborated with other brands like Sally Hansen, Hue and Keds.

Reese lives in New York and is one of the few African American women in mainstream fashion that owns her own label.

Local Mover and Shaker: Alpha Coles Blackburn

Alpha Coles Blackburn grew up in Lynchburg, VA. Blackburn received a degree in painting and sculpture at Howard University.

The award winning fashion designer and model hosted a local talk show in the 70's. Blackburn was once the fashion editor for Indianapolis Monthly. She's also designed uniforms for both the Indiana Pacers and the Indianapolis Colts. A fun fact: in 2005, Indianapolis Monthly reported the entrepreneur had over 200 pairs of shoes...think of the shoe porn!

Blackburn is now the president and CEO of Blackburn Architects; which gained national press from overseeing the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center project in Cincinnati, OH. The civic leader and humanitarian sits on more than 60 boards and councils throughout the city of Indianapolis including Indiana University/Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI), the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Indianapolis Cultural Development Commision.

The city of Richmond penned February 27, 2001 as Alpha Blackburn Day.

The Achiever: Tyra Banks

Tyra Lynne Banks was born in 1973 in Inglewood, CA. Her mother is a fashion manager and a NASA photographer. Her father is a computer consultant. Banks was accepted for UCLA and USC to major in television producing.

Banks began modeling as a junior in high school. Banks has been on the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle and Harper's Bazaar. She's walked the runway for many designers including Chanel, Anna Sui and Christian Dior. She was the first Black woman to appear on the covers of GQ and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. Banks was also the first Black woman to appear on the cover of the Victoria Secret's catalog. Banks retired from modeling in 2005 to concentrate on her television career.

Banks has done numerous acting spots on the small screen like Fresh Prince of Bel Air, MadTV, Felicity and many more. Banks started her own production company, Bankable Productions, and released her own talk show. She introduced us to the world of modeling with her reality show contest, America's Next Top Model. Banks received a Daytime Emmy in 2008 for the Tyra Banks Show.

Banks was also a featured in movies including Higher Learning, Love and Basketball and Halloween: Resurrection.

The entertainer also tried her hand in music. Along with being in many music videos, the model released her own music single, Shake Yo Body. Banks also released a song with NBA player, Kobe Bryant.

Banks is still working but has recently been accepted to Harvard Business school.

The Entrepenuer: Iman

"My dream woman is Iman" - Yves Saint Laurent

Iman, born Iimaan Maxamed Cabdulmajiid, was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1955. Her father was an ambassador to Saudi Arabia and her mother was a gynecologist. Iman studied at Nairobi University in Kenya and majored in political science. She was discovered while attending Nairobi and moved to the United States in 1975. The model is fluent in five languages: Somali, Arabic, Italian, French and English.

The supermodel was featured in countless fashion magazines, including Vogue, and walked for many designers during her two decades of modeling. She was also the muse to some of the top photographers in the world.

In 1994, Iman started her own cosmetic line geared toward women of color to fill the void of hard to find colors. Iman Cosmetics was worth over $25 million in 2010. Iman also has a fashion line featured on HSN called Global Chic.

Iman has been on numerous television shows and movies and is the current host and judge of Fashion Show, a reality fashion designer competition show on the Bravo network.

She continues to help her native country with numerous charities and fundraisers.

The model is married to rock glam god, David Bowie and is still one of the hardest working women in fashion history.

The Rising Star: Chanel Iman

Chanel Iman is one of the hottest models on the runway right now. The half Black half Koren model was born Chanel Iman Robinson in Atlanta, GA. in 1990.

The model began her career at 13 working with the Ford Modeling agency in Los Angeles. In 2007, Iman was considered by one of the next top supermodels by Vogue. The model has been on the covers of Vogue and Teen Vogue. She's also been featured in countless fashion editorials. Iman has walked the runway of many top designers including Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs. In 2010, Iman became a Victoria Secret angel.

Iman lives in New York but currently co-owns a boutique called The Red Bag Boutique in Los Angeles with her mother.

Dream Deferred: Billie Holiday

I LOVE Billie Holiday! She is one of the people, dead or alive, I would want to have dinner with. Her life was so complex and she lost the battle to circumstance. You can hear the pain in her voice.

Born Eleanora Fagan in Pennsylvania in1915, Holiday was bounced around from home to home and was sent to a boarding school because of her truancy at the age of 10. Holiday dropped out of school at 11 years old to work in bars. Holiday was raped at age 12 and worked as a prositute at age 14.

When the singer started performing, she used the name "Billie Dove" and changed it to Holiday after her father. Holiday sang at bars and lounges until she signed with Brunswick Records. She was nicknamed Lady Day by her close friend and saxophonist. Holiday sang with legends including Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and Artie Shaw. She signed with Columbia Records in the late 1930s.

In May 1947, the singer was arrested for possession of narcotics and was forced to rehab several times. She was convicted and her New York City Cabaret Card was revoked causing Holiday to be blacklisted from performing in the NYC area. Holiday took to the road singing around the world. New York finally opened up to Holiday with open arms allowing her to sing at Carnegie Hall.

Holiday died July 17, 1959. She was arrested on her death bed for narcotic possession a month earlier. She died with $.70 in the bank.

I could talk all day about Lady Day. This is just a small piece of her puzzled journey. She is an enigma whose talent will never to be duplicated.

Eartha Kitt was the an entertainer like no other. A household name and star of the stage and the big screen, Kitt oozed an unearthly seduction like no other entertainer of her period. She was Catwoman for gosh sakes!

Rumored born of mixed race in South Carolina in 1927, Kitt found herself facing racism within her own house. She was raised by a caregiver until her guardian married and her new husband didn't want to raise Kitt because of her complexion. Kitt was sent to live with her biological mother when she was eight years old.

Kitt began singing in 1948 with a cabaret company called the Katherine Dunham Company. Her signature song, Santa Baby, was released in 1953. Kitt spoke four languages and sang in seven. The entertainer starred in many movies throughout her lifetime and contributed in a lot of voiceover work. She was Catwoman during the thrid season of Batman in 1967 and had her own show in 1969.

Kitt lobbied and was an advocate for homosexual rights and supported same-sex marriages throughout her life. Kitt worked on stage and film up to her death. Eartha Kitt died of colon cancer in 2008.

Video Vixen: Beverly Peele

Beverly Peele was born in Los Angeles in 1975. She began modeling at 12 years old. Peele appeared on her first magazine cover, Madmoiselle, in 1989. She's done covers for Vogue, Elle and Cosmopolitan and has done runway shows for designers like Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Versace.

Peele retired from modeling in 1995. After the birth of her daughter, Peele's modeling prospects dwindled and she began acting. She was featured on shows like Sister, Sister and Girlfriends. The model is also known for her music video work being featured in George Michael's Too Funky and Heavy D's Nuttin but Love videos.

The model got into some legal trouble when she was arrested in 2005 for credit card fraud; using a card she found in a shopping mall. She appeared on the Tyra Bank Show in 2006 to speak out about the dangers of modeling. Peele was also in a major car accident in 2010 leaving her and her daughter is serious condition.

The Pioneer: Beverly Johnson

There wouldn't be a present day black model if there was no Beverly Johnson.

Born in 1952, Johnson grew up in Buffalo, NY with the desire to have a career in law. While studying criminal justice at Northwestern University, Johnson began modeling. Johnson has been on over 500 magazine covers and is considered to be the first "black" woman to grace the cover of Vogue Magazine in 1974.

The model branched out to acting in 1976. Johnson has appeared in movies and television shows like Ashanti, Law & Order and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. She was a judge for model reality show, She's Got the Look for two seasons.

Johnson authored a book, Beverly Johnson's Guide to a Life of Health and Beauty, which was released in December 1981. Johnson is also an entrepreneur with a line of African American hair care products and wigs.

A Beauty on Canvas: Peggy Dillard-Toone

Peggy Dillard-Toone was born in Greenville County, South Carolina. She is the youngest of 10 children.

At 16, Dillard-Toone won a full scholarship to the Pratt Institue of Technology and has a degree in fine arts with a concentration in fashion merchandising and marketing. She worked as a fashion illustrator, sewing instructor and a designer before modeling.

Dillard-Toone was the second African American woman to appear on the cover of Vogue (Beverly Johnson was the first "Black" woman on the cover. Donyale Luna never identified herself as "black" so many people stripped her of that honor.) and graced other fashion mags like Essence, Mademoiselle and Cosmopolitan.

Dillard-Toone founded a hair salon, Turning Heads Salon, and has a beauty and holistic living advice article featured in magazines and newspapers around the globe. The model is also an artist. She now owns a physical and online art gallery in New York City with her husband called Indasa Fine Arts Gallery. She and her husband also operate two bed and breakfast hotels in Harlem.

Slave to Uniqueness: Grace Jones

She paved the way with her high top fade. She opened the door for Lady Gaga, Lil' Kim and Nikki Minaj. Grace Jones is the androgynous entertainer that shocked and wowed the industry in the 1970's and 1980's.

Born Grace Mendoza in Spanish Town, Jamaica in 1948. Ironically, her father was a minister. Her family left the island and came to New York in 1968. She soon started modeling and signed a recording contract with Island Records in 1977.

The then disco queen transformed in to a new age goddess in the 80's. The entertainer won a Grammy in 1983 for her long video, A One Man Show and in 1986 she won a MTV Video Music Award for her hit, Pull Up to My Bumper. Jones starred in 19 films including Conan the Barbarian and Boomerang.

Jones was best known for her antics and her unique personal taste. At times a welcome gesture would be a lick to the face. Conan co-star, Arnold Swarzenegger complained that Jones was "too tough" during the filming. She hobnobed with Andy Warhol and was once engaged to actor Dolph Lundgren.

Jones quoted, "Models are there to look like mannequins, not like real people. Art and illusion are supposed to be fantasy."

Bald is Beaming: Pat Evans

Pat Evans was a revolutionary model; on the scene in the 1960's and 1970's.

Evans was featured on in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and other fashion magazines, but earned her acclaim from music group the Ohio Players' album cover and photos with legendary funkman Issac Hayes.

Evans spoke out against the racially charged modeling industry saying, "black modeling is a form of prostitution" in an article in Essence Magazine printed in 1974. Shortly before her article was printed, the model disconnected ties with the modeling industry.

Evans now has her own modeling agency, Pat Evans Models, out of New York. Her models are seen on advertisements like Smirnoff and Colgate. She also travels with celebrities as a makeup artist.

As of 2009, Evans now lives in Pennsylvania and is a teacher at Northhampton Community College. The former model teaches two classes; a modeling course and a beauty class.

Shut Yo Mouth: Pam Grier

Pamela Suzette Grier was born in Winston Salem, NC, in 1949. Her style screamed sensuality and black power and her wicked afro would be imitated by women in the 1970's and today.

Discovered by director Jack Hill in 1970, she became the staple of 1970's blaxploitation films like Coffy, Sheba Baby and Foxy Brown. In the 80's, Grier did small roles in television like Miami Vice, Night Court and the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Quentin Tarratino brought Grier back to life on the big screen in the movie Jackie Brown.

In 2004, the diva started in the Showtime hit the L Word and continues to entertain both small and big screen audiences.

Pam Grier's memoirs was published in 2010. Foxy: My Live in Three Acts explored her life including her rape at the age of six and her past relationships with Richard Pryor and Freddie Prinze.

Tragic Endings: Donyale Luna

As the first African American model to be put on the cover of Vogue, Donyale Luna had great potential. Born Peggy Ann Freeman in Detroit, Michigan in 1945, Luna was always described as a person living in a fairy tale.

Luna was featured in sketch from on the cover of Harper's Bazaar in 1965. Soon after she graced the cover of Vogue. A London magazine hailed Luna as the complete new image of the Negro woman. Luna appeared in Playboy in 1975.

The model turned actress was featured in films like Andy Warhol's Camp, the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus, Salome and many more.When asked about her fame in Hollywood and how it would benefit the minority culture, the model mention it could be "groovy" but "she could care less".

The model enjoyed the use of LSD and died of a drug overdose in 1979, at the age of 33.

You Better WORK! Pat Cleveland

Pat Cleveland is a supermodel known for her amazingly entertaining walk and her mounds of gorgeous flowing hair. Her Black-Cherokee-Irish mixed ethnicity wows the masses. Even Josephine Baker wanted the model to play her in a biopic.

Cleveland was discovered at 15 years old in 1967 by a Vogue editor, Clarie Donovan, on the subway in New York City. the model has walked the runway for many designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Halston.

Cleveland is also a poet and wrote a book called, "In the Spirit of Grace".

Cleveland still graces runway and magazine with her presence. Her daughter, model Anna van Ravenstein, follows in her footsteps.

Mother of the Rainbow: Josephine Baker

Black Pearl - Creole Goddess - Black Venus - Josephine Baker is the mother of black sensuality. Baker was born Freda Josephine McDonald on June 3, 1906 in St. Louis, Missouri. Baker began as a maid and a nanny before she started singing and waitressing in night clubs at 13 years old. Baker would continue to perform on screen and stage and was known for her comedic dance and eye rolling.

Baker's style and performaces will influence modern day celebrity, pop and R&B artists like Beyonce, Keri Hilson and Halle Berry.

Baker was constantly haunted by bigotry and couldn't find fame in the United States. So the entertainer moved to Paris in the 1920's. At that point in her life, she was famed as the most photographed woman in the world. Baker would try to return to the US but was run off of American soil because of her fight and protest against racism. Baker ultimately stayed in Paris where she performed for the Armed Forces and served as a spy for the French Army during World War II. She was not welcome by American society until the seventies.

Baker, who was proposed marriage over 1500 times, was married and divorced three times. But her biggest feat in her personal life was the adoption of her "Rainbow Tribe"; her 12 adopted children from different ethnicities.

Baker died April 12, 1975 of a cerebral hemorage.

Black is Beautiful: Naomi Sims

Today we will feature Naomi Sims.

Considered the first black supermodel, Naomi Sims was born March 30, 1948 in Oxford, Mississippi. After growing up in Pittsburgh, Sims majored in psychology at New York University at night while attending the Fashion Institute of Technology. Sims started modeling with the help of Wilhemina Cooper, founder of the Wilhemina Modeling agency.

Though Sims was repeatedly shunned because of her dark complexion, she was the first African American to grace the covers of magazine like Ladies Home Journal and Cosmopolitan, a feat that is difficult for even current black models and actors.

In 1976, after Sims' stint as a model, she started a multimillion dollar wig line called the Naomi Sims Collection and a cosmetic company soon followed. Her beauty products are still sold online and throughout the New York City area. Sims wrote five books on health and beauty.

Sims lost her battle to breast cancer on August 1, 2009 at 61 years old.

I'm Julia Rutland, owner of Aesthetic Design Style and my creative outlet is designing statetment pieces for my line of jewelry called ShaSAM3.

Where are you from?

Born a Buckeye, but have lived most of my life in Indianapolis.

Officially since October 2009 - unofficially all my life.

When did you start ShaSAM3?

October 2009 - the name is a hybrid of my three beautiful daughters' names.

What inspired you to start ShaSAM3?

My mother-in-law had a big suitcase full of costume jewelry she found at her mother's house. All kinds of stuff from all eras and I just was beside myself. We all got the chance to go through it and pick out things we liked; so that's what started my wheels turning. There were a ton of vintage brooches and earrings that had no mates so I just knew I could create something nice from these pieces. I love big oversized accessories and I really love rings. I wasn't finding rings big enough for my liking so I started desiging them out of need :) The more I wore them the more people asked where I got them so I thought maybe this would be something I could share with others. This way the beautiful jewelry that would have been thrown away or left in that suitcase could be cherished for years to come with a modern twist.

What sets ShaSAM3 apart from other accessories lines?

I LOVE using unexpected things and making them beautiful or extraordinary. Denim is pretty dull but when you work it into a piece of jewelry it takes on a life of its own and becomes art. The best part is taking denim -which was at one time considered something only "blue collared" workers wore- and turning into something that I pair with an evening gown. Irony runs through many of my pieces. My love of finding new life for old things got me thinking of all the denim I had laying around. That turned into the statement pieces I create out of denim. I sometimes incorporate the vintage jewelry with the denim for an unexpected marriage of hard and soft that really seems to work.

Who are your influences?

Elsa Schiaparelli, Marchaesa Casati, and my Great Great Aunt Rose (whom I never had the pleasure of meeting but she smoked cigars and wore pants at a time when "ladies" weren't suppose to do so - I love hearing stories about her)

What is your favorite piece?

One called Ring Leader that I designed because I was in love with these huge metal rings I had lying around. I added some denim and some nice natural baubles and it turned into something better than I imagined in my head.

Leggings Are NOT Pants

One of the most misused trend out on the streets now are leggings. You can pair this accessory with any outfit, casual or dress; but I've seen leggings being assaulted and accosted lately. People repeat after me...leggings are NOT pants, especially if my butt looks like its been put in a cement mixer...or if you can see my unmentionables...

It's not just me, there's a whole Facebook page dedicated for people against leggings as pants.

See they're all using leggings as an accessory; even LiLo! If she can do it, you can too. So promise you will not wear leggings as pants. If you see someone who does, gently tap them on the shoulder and make them take the pledge!

I was so lucky to meet Tiffiany Gilstrap-Scott last week for the first time. She is such a talented person. It's very rare you find a genuinely nice individual. Read her interview and you'll see what I mean.

Introduce Yourself

My name is Tiffiany Gilstrap-Scott. I was born and raised in a small town in Indiana. I have a bachelors' degree in Merchandising and Design from Academy of Design and Technology in Tampa, FL. I just moved back here about 7 months ago. I love to design and also play soccer; its' still a fun past time for me. I work two jobs other than designing. People call me crazy all the time, why do you work so much. My answer is you have to work hard to get your dreams. No one is ever going to hand you something you have to be persistent and work through the rough spots to get to the prize lol :).

Where are you from?
I grew up in Tipton, Indiana.
How long have you been designing?
I have been doing this a long time. My mother and grandmother both taught me at a very young age how to crochet and sew. I remember sitting on my grandmothers lap teaching me how to sew my baby doll clothes . It's just something I just always did. I used to make some of my dresses for school growing up as a kid and special event I had. I just loved having something that I know no one else would. There is nothing worse than showing up somewhere where the girl is wearing the exact same dress as you. Thank heavens that has never happened to be, but it has happened to people I know. It's an awful thing.
When did you start Clique Da Cour?
Well it was part of a school project actually in high school and I just been fine tuning it ever since. I really started getting into it when I was in college. I know it was something I wanted to keep pursuing and I figured I better start soon and just keep building on as I go along. You're never finished; it is always an on going process to keep bettering yourself as you get older and learn more things along the way. I always tell people you can never know everything in your line of work there is always something to be learned to better yourself not only as a businesswomen but as a person too.

What inspired you to start Clique Da Cour?
I would have to say a good part of it was from my grandfather Dennis Gilstrap; which is no longer with us. He was a very successful business man. He started a company with his partner Henry known as {the} Val corporation. It was a retail establishment with hardline and softline products. He sold it several years ago, but he also owned a warehouse several apartment complexes along with buying houses and flipping them for profit or renting them out. He was always in a business venture and always trying to get to the next step and conquer something else. He was very persistent and never stopped working. I hope to one day be as successful as he was.
What sets Clique Da Cour apart from other lines?
I try to make each piece different. I want someone to appreciate the time and effort. I not only want it to look good on but also be visual appealing and someone go wow you really made this yourself. We try and make each piece unique to set us apart, its not something you could go in a department store and but off the shelf.

Who are your influences?
My mother Angie, my grandfather Dennis, and my grandmother Georgia.
What is your favorite piece?I don't think I have one! As long as what I make for someone and they appreciate it and love it; that's all I ask. That's the best reward I can get.

What are your price points?
I would say they're from anywhere to $15 to couple hundred but that is for a gown. I do want everyone to enjoy my pieces. I didn't grow up with a lot of money and I do want people feel that they can afford my clothes. You don't have to live in a mansion to get designer wares.

Who do you prefer: Independent or Mainstream designers?
Independent designers!!! I do like some mainstream, but its getting to the point where anyone with money can design. As long as you have a big enough checkbook you just pay people to do everything for you. There are some mainstream designers that went to school for design and worked their butts off to get to where they are today and I applaud them for that. We all know its not easy. Now we got all these people that are just getting into just to make money and to most independent designers it means more to us than just money its something we put our blood, sweat and tears into; doing what we love. Most independent designers are an artist {and} the business person, they do it all from production to the end product and then sell it for a profit.

Any other special projects you want to share with our readers?

I am going to be entering into a competition called Indy Fashion Time (IFT). I am really excited about it. You comprise three looks which one of them is avant garde. I have some great ideas and starting to get started as we speak. It's coming May 31st to June 4th, 2011. The final competition is being held at the State Fairgrounds.

My name is Sarah Radford and I am the founder and designer of Chic Gems Jewelry. I have loved fashion since I was a child and have worked for numerous fashion companies.

What inspired you to start Chic Gems, etc.?

I was wearing suits to work everyday for my corporate sales job and I decided that I needed a way to make my wardrobe more exciting. I was not thrilled with the fashion jewelry that I was finding at stores, so I thought, "why not create my own?" I love all things fashion and I have a passion for helping women look beautiful. Most mainstream designers began as independent designers, so I support both. I think it is great when independent designers achieve their dreams and share their designs with the World.

Interview with the Plus Vintage Queen, Sweetooth

Last week I found an amazing designer on the Sense of Fashion website. For those who know me (Janelle) personally, you know I'm a proud chunky girl. I'm always looking for designers that promote plus size women. Plus size, according to fashion circles, are sizes eight and up. Depressing...yes I know; but the reality is "normal" sized women are considered plus size even though the average woman is size 14.

Sooo I found the designer, Sweetooth. An independent designer hailing from Cleveland, OH. I'm so happy she agreed to do an interview with me. (Take a look at the Taffy Pull Dress below...yeah I ordered it!)

How long have you been designing?

About 3 years.

How did you come up with the name Cupcake Cuddlebunny? Sweetooth?

Cupcake & Cuddlebunny was just supposed to be a temporary name when I came up with it. I started out just doing alterations and someone was interested in a garment that required an invoice, so I thought I should probably have a name/logo/separate bank account. One of my nicknames was "cupcake" and I called my cat my "cuddlebunny" all the time, so I just threw it together. I'm actually changing the name of the company to "Sweetooth Couture" in the coming weeks. Too many folks think my business is a bakery or a kids clothing store, so its just easier that way.

Sweetooth Couture is meant to still sound sassy like C&C, and embody the campyness, fun style, and daring lines my clothing offers. I really only came up with it because I like the idea of a tooth as a symbol for ferociousness!

Why plus size? Why vintage? Why couture?

I started doing plus size stuff because I've been a plus sized person most of my life and up until recently, have always struggled to find the type of clothing I've wanted to wear. I've had a deep love for vintage clothing for as long as I can remember, and so much of it is really small in the bust and waist even if you're lucky enough to find it in larger sizes. Vintage clothing has so much to offer that today's clothing doesn't have- impeccable construction, glamour, fine details. What's not to love?

The dilemma here is that when you're a modern size 18 like I am, you end up searching for cute stuff in vintage size 22-24, which is basically the chupacabra of clothing. Its hard to find, and when you do find it, its usually overpriced at an actual vintage store, as opposed to the cheaper items you can score at the thrift store or at estate sales.

When I moved to New York City to finish my psychology degree in 2005, I found that there were basically no thrift stores that carried plus sized vintage (Re/Dress NYC wasn't open yet), so when I'd visit my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, I'd thrift my little heart out and come back to NYC with garbage bags full of dresses that needed repairs or alterations. This is basically when I began to teach myself how to sew.

I moved back home a couple of years later and my friends and acquaintances noticed my style and I started to get a lot of requests to do personal shopping and make stuff for folks. I think a lot of people have that special garment that they have a lot of sentimental value wrapped up in, and often our bodies grown and change and that garment sits in some one's closet for the rest of their lives. I really wanted to unearth those garments for folks and alter them to fit again, so couture ended up being part of what I offer. I certainly am no couturier by the strictest of standards, but I believe that one of a kind, hand sewn, custom garments are special, and people of size deserve them!

By the Summer of 2008, I had a six month long wait list for custom garments, and I thought I should probably open an Etsy store; you make my order management easier, so that's how Cupcake & Cuddlebunny was born.

I started designing the Sweetooth line last year because I had so many customers get irritated with me when I'd only offer one of a garment. I had never designed before, and quite honestly am a terrible drawer, so I took what I knew about pattern making (very little) and tried to create a line of 12 pieces that embodied a lot of the requests for custom clothing that I'd received. Working with a manufacturer to produce pieces brought on a whole new set of challenges that I've never dealt with before, but it was a really great learning experience. I've received a wonderful response from the Winter 2011 line, and am working on a Summer line right now.

What type of woman is a Sweetooth Couture woman?

I think a Sweetooth Couture woman (and I don't just want to cater to women- I want anybody who likes my clothing to wear it) is bold and confident. I don't make clothing to hide people's bodies, I want it to enhance people's bodies. Coco Chanel was at the forefront of breaking women from wearing corsets and girdles from day-to-day, and I really try to embody that spirit. I'd like to think that when people wear my clothing, they feel liberated, sexy and stylish no matter what their size or shape.

What's special about Sweetooth Couture?

Sweetooth Couture is special because it makes people feel special. I try my best to run an ethical business as well. I'd say about 95% of the fabric I use is vintage or "upcycled" as fancy folks like to say, and most of my zippers, buttons, appliques, and trim are vintage as well. My new line uses a lot of recycled cotton and sustainable wool. I promote altering old clothing so folks don't go out and buy new stuff that's made in a sweatshop. I pack things in re-usable envelopes as much as I can, print on only recycled paper, and try to make things as affordable as possible. I employ a non-profit pricing structure that pays me $15 an hour for my work + materials costs and that's it. I'm a one-person show, so that helps to keep costs as low as possible. I am very serious about providing honest and reliable customer service, too! It gets really hard to compete with big box stores on that type of thing, but I really do try my best.

Explain how you construct your pieces? Vintage?

I am a huge proponent of doing custom fittings. Obviously, I don't always have the luxury of that when folks are ordering online, but having an accurate set of your own measurements is almost impossible to get by yourself, so when I can fit someone and then fit them a second time during construction of a garment, I know it will fit as accurately as possible. If I just have measurements to work with, I crank my adjustable dress form to those measurements and make it work.

After a fitting, I take into consideration where the customer will wear the garment and what it is for, and try to find the best fabric to suit their needs. I end up making a lot of garments out of vintage polyester, which most people despise even thinking about, but in reality, it doesn't wrinkle, has a good amount of stretch, and does not lose shape or color after several washings. (Its also never going to biodegrade, so I think its great to have people wear it instead of throwing it out.) I usually have a customer send me links to garments they like or provide me with pictures, and I go from there. I tend to put my own design spin on garments, which most people really like. If someone wants me to make a reproduction of something, I usually turn the job down. I'm a designer first, seamstress second. I don't really want to spend my time making stuff that already exists.

What are your inspirations?

My main inspiration is the social and political implication that fat people should be ashamed of their bodies. I want to defy that notion, and I do, each and every day with the way I dress AND what I do for a living. My friends also have a huge impact on what I design. I am lucky to have many gorgeous, plus sized, confident people in my life and I feel honored that they think the art I make is special enough to actually wear out in public. They inspire me to keep plugging away when I feel like I can't do it.

Do you prefer independent designers or mainstream designers?

Independents, definitely. I think what happens a lot of the time is that Independent designers grow weary of constantly scrapping and scraping for things like food, rent, and health insurance, and end up selling out to mainstream lines and stores. That's the nature of the beast, and I don't judge anyone for doing what they have to do to get by or get ahead in this industry. Its hard to get your voice heard, you know what I mean? Some of my favorite independent clothing designers are Bertha Pearl of Size Queen, Valerie Mayen of Yellowcake, Mondo Guerra, Lucy Peterson of Hissyfit, Leanne Marshall, and Rodarte.

Who are your influences?

Though it doesn't show much in my clothing, I am undeniably in love with the more outlandish couture fashion giants. Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Heatherette, old school Karl Lagerfeld. I think my fashions most reflect Mary Quant and Coco Chanel, or at least I hope they do.

What is the average price of your pieces?

$14-$78 with some "couture" or super fancy vintage that needed a lot of work going a bit higher. Custom work is $15 per hour plus the cost of materials.

What is your favorite piece?

The Divinity Dress. It's really simple if you take off the epaulettes and really fancy when you attach them.

Do you have any side projects you want to share with our readers?

Yes! I am working alongside Valerie Mayen, from Project Runway Season 8 to build a sewing co-op and fashion incubator in Cleveland, Ohio called Buzz and Growl. (You can check it out at www.buzzandgrowl.com) Its her brainchild, but I'm working with her to establish it as a non-profit and secure funding for youth programming. I'm really excited to see how it turns out!

Longing for Spring

We thought Jack Frost was visiting, but it looks like he's going to stay for awhile. Forty nine states in the country have snow on the ground. Even Hawaii has snow in the mountainous regions. The only thing that perks me up (besides hot toddys, warm blanket and guilty pleasure T.V.) is the hope spring in near.

I love spring. The grass and flowers start growing. The birds start chripping. The days are longer. Most importantly, your wardrobe starts to shift and layers start to fall and even SOMETIMES you have to go shopping. Indiana Fashionista Meetup Luncheon

On Saturday, January 8, Aesthetic Design Style was happy to be in the company of some key players in the Indiana fashion industry. The Indiana Fashionista Meetup Luncheon brought fashion bloggers, designers and photographers together to network and share tips of the business.

The luncheon, planned by Leah Barr of Circle City Style, included attendees from Indianapolis and Bloomington; bloggers and photographers. Others in attendance were Michael Trace from Michael Trace Photography, Crystal Hammon and Emily Lytle-Painter from Dresses Her Days Vintage, Jessica Quirk from What I Wore, freelance fashion writer Erica Sagon, Truen James creative director of the House of 5th clothing label and treasurer of Indianapolis Fashion Collective, Christy Pastore founder of the online magazine Fashion Wrap Up, Chelsea Kouns model and the 2011 face of Fashion Wrap Up, Kaitlyn Elyse Fashion Wrap Up stylist, owner and creator of T. Party Clothing, photographer David Van Deman and Janelle Cissell from Ruby Leonne.

Held at Cafe Django, owned by Barr's uncle, we laughed and talked shop. Aesthetic Design Style hopes to work with all attendees in the near future. We are very thankful to Barr for setting the luncheon up and can't wait for more activities and networking opportunites in the near future.

When people think of thrifting, they generally think of stores that smell like moth balls and look like 100 closets threw up items that someone named Mable or Agatha once wore. The persona of thrifting is changing. It's no longer a hobby for old ladies or a place you take tattered expendable clothes. Thrifting is a new retail outlet providing quality pieces at inexpensive prices. As more people think outside of the department store or boutique box, thrifting will continue to gain popularity.

Fly Won, an Indianapolis fashionista, is owner of the Fly's Nest, an online store through the Sense of Fashion website. The Fly's Nest has been selling products from clothing, shoes and accessories online for a year. The average price of her pieces are $10-$15; nothing is over $50.

Other mass or box thrift stores, like Goodwill or Disabled American Veterans (DAV), rely on the donations of others. These places become a catch all for pieces from different decades and price points. But when Fly Won looks for items to sell, she considers pieces she would personally wear. Fly Won notes she would wear everything she sells it if were in her size.

Shopping at thrift stores, online or at a storefront, can be intimidating.When shopping in thrift stores, Fly Won suggest you don't go with the intent to find a specific thing.

"Let your eye guide you. I rarely sift through the multitude of things in thrift stores. I just do a quick walk through and let my eye be my guide. Meaning, I wait for something to CATCH my eye."

Fly Won uses a different approach when purchasing items online.

"ASK QUESTIONS before purchasing and read the fine print. Expect things to possibly have slight wear, OR make sure you are aware of any flaws."

Thrifting is not a new retail outlet, but it's reputation is evolving into a popular trend. If you ask the right questions and let your eye be you guide, you will find some diamonds in the rough.

You look in your mailbox and you just got your brand new issue of "X" high fashion magazine. You take a seat on the couch and flip through the high glossy pages and see the dress of your dreams. Well it would be the dress of your dreams if the hem were longer and it was a size 10...and the color was neutral instead of honeysuckle and orange...oh and the hardware of the dress is a bit bulky...and if you could wear it to the office without being called into human resources for sexual harassment...and it you could afford it. Now that you're pondering the piece staring back at you, that dress just won't do. Can you call John Doe couture and tell him his vision for your closet doesn't meet your needs? Or tell him a few changes and a couple of hundred dollars cheaper you or people like you could buy the dress?

Fashion is not born on the runways of New York or Paris. It's not John Doe's best or worst dressed list. Fashion is derived from the streets of your city; your neighborhood. Who better to monitor the hub of fashion but the independent fashion designer? You can have a relationship with an independent fashion designer. Most independent designers will make a garment to your preference.

The independent designer is not confined to a look, trend, or status. An independent designer is not defined by a logo or label. Independent fashion is breaking the mold and creating pieces out of the ordinary; from pret-a-porter to couture. Independent fashion also provides revenue to local economies and produces a creative workforce. Two key ingredients of a striving culture.

We, at Aesthetic Design Style, want to be an advocate for independent fashion designers. In our original mission statement, we introduced ourselves as liaisons to retailers and independent designers; but we are much more than that. We want to be at the forefront of the independent fashion revolution. Our new mission statement reads:

Aesthetic Design Style partners with and supports independent fashion and accessory designers. We are a liaison and the voice between the designer, media, and retail establishments; fostering an independent fashion revolution by implanting seeds of ingenuity within the fashion industry.

When I sat down with Amy Gibbons of Bags of Blessing two years ago and said, "here's what I want to do and you would be my very first designer BUT I'm not sure how I'm going to do it", I can only be filled with joy and relief that she believed in my vision as much as I did. That was the beginning and we keep learning and reaching each and everyday.

I started Aesthetic Design Style to help people. That was it. That was my vision. I thought I could combine my love of fashion with my love of people and hopefully help someone realize their dream along the way. I cannot tell you the ups and downs I've encountered during the past two years; as many people have experienced when starting something from the ground up. Each and every up or down has been a learning experience I have taken to heart and taken personally to help our designers and our boutique owners get where they want to be. Not only have I learned so much about business in general, but I've learned a TON about myself.

The most important thing I've learned is that this is what I want to do in life. How lucky am I to have found the passion I have always carried with me but hadn't known what it was. On the worst day the thought never ever crossed my mind to quit. There were a lot of things in my life that I've started but never finished (not that I'm proud of that), but my business was not one of those things and it never will be.

This past year has also brought the answers to my prayers in the way of Janelle and Alyssa. There is so much to be said for good people. To have such talented individuals who can see my vision and genuinely care about the business as much as I do is truly hard to find and I found it TWICE! Each brings their own specialty and talents to Aesthetic Design and 2011 is sure to be our best year ever. To have clarity and focus and know what needs to be done AND have help doing it - there's nothing to stop us.

We hope you stay tuned to all we have "up our sleeves" and keep supporting our wonderful designers and independent fashion as a whole. Buying local here in Indiana or anywhere you are is important to each economy and if we all a conscious effort to do so the industry and our cities will thrive.

Our focus all year long is to get our designers into boutiques and into the hands of shoppers around the world. That's our goal. We've achieved, we've met halfway, and we've fallen short - it happens and we've learned from it all.

We could not do what we do without you and all you do for Aesthetic Design Style all year long. From the referrals to the facebook "likes" to the retweets we appreciate each and every acknowledgment that we are on the right path with what we are most passionate about. We work so hard behind the scenes and to see things coming to fruition is simply the best gift we could ever hope to get.

This time of year it's so easy to get caught up in what someone else has or thinking we NEED so many things to make us happy. The holidays are a nice time to sit back and re-evaluate where we are in our lives and what is most important to us. Take the time to just STOP and realize what you have and appreciate each and every moment with the special people in your lives.

Hurrah for Indianapolis: Number Five in the Top 25 Shopping Cities

Forbes Magazine released an article featuring it's top 25 best shopping cities last week. Indianapolis ranked fifth on the list, beating major metropolitan areas like New York and Chicago. Perhaps the rest of the country sees the prize us fellow Hoosiers ignore. According to Forbes, Indianapolis houses 5,955 retail locations and 18 shopping centers. Add on the seven percent sales tax, and Indianapolis is considered a major jewel in the retail economy.

But what makes Indianapolis so great? Is it our big box retailing or our independent and local shopping finds? There are many local retailers, within the Indianapolis and surrounding areas, that offer better selection, price and quality than its mainstream counterparts. We couldn't feature all of them, but here are a few gems that can't go unoticed.

Fountain Square: IndySwank (photo pulled from IndySwank FB page) Journey down Virginia Avenue and you find the Fountain Square district. In the heart of Fountain Square you can find one of the creme de la creme of vintage boutiques, IndySwank. IndySwank features vintage items and handcrafted works from many of Indianapolis' fashion designers. IndySwank's address is 1043 Virginia Ave #4 here in Indianapolis.

Castleton: Butterfly Consignment (photo pulled from Butterfly Consignment's Facebook page) Butterfly has been opened for a year, but has already made its mark on retail here in the Circle City. The shop sells gently used, new and handmade goods. It's your one stop shop for clothing, jewelry and body care items. Butterfly Consignment is located on 6697 E. 82nd St. in the Castleton Village Shopping Plaza.

Broad Ripple: Rain Boutique (photo pulled from Rain Boutique's FB page) Rain Boutique is a place where California and Indianapolis meet. Owned by two longtime friends, Mesha Cabbell and Brittany Manning, the store specializes in denim, handbags, standard and plus size clothing. Rain opened up a second store in California in December 2009. Rain is located at 839 E. Westfield Blvd in the heart of Broad Ripple.

Downtown: Silver in the City (photo pulled from Silver in the City's website) On Massachusetts Avenue you will find a gift store that will WOW your senses. Open since 2000, Silver in the City was voted best local gift store four times. It shares space with its sister store, Home in the City. You can't walk out of this store empty handed. Silver and Home in the City is located at 434 Massachusetts Ave in Downtown Indianapolis.

Let's try to push Indianapolis to number one on Forbes' list next year. Make sure you support your local boutiques too.

Meet the Team

We have recently acquired some new members to our Aesthetic Design Style family. This time they aren't on the designer side (though one is an AMAZING designer and I hope she'll join us in that capacity too) but the business side of what we do. I thought an introduction was in order and a short interview with both would give you a small view into their worlds and why they are such a good fit for us. So without further ado please MEET ALYSSA AND JANELLE ~

Alyssa, a native of Fowler, Indiana., is a senior at the Art Institute of Indianapolis majoring in fashion design. Not only does she intern for Aesthetic Design Style, but she also works at the Pitaya boutique in Broad Ripple. Once Alyssa graduates, she wants to work for a fashion house or label while working on her own line.

Janelle, born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana is a junior at Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI) majoring in public relations. She runs a plus size fashion and lifestyle blog called Ruby Leonne. After graduation, Janelle plans to work freelance in fashion public relations.

Now for a little fun ~ We asked Alyssa and Janelle the same questions and here are their answers ~

1. Why independent fashion instead of mainstream fashion?

Alyssa: "I worked in retail for 3 years and I loved it at first then they started enforcing rule after rule so I started hating the corporate world "

Janelle: "There are so many independent designers out there more worthy of praise then its mainstream counterparts. Independent designers are in touch with their audience. They see trends from the street first and play with those trends. Independent designers are under the radar, so they can experiment with silhouettes and fabrics. They don’t sway their aesthetic because of money. They stay true to their true love…fashion.

2. Tell us about your “aha” moment when you finally knew what you wanted to do with your life?

Alyssa: "I worked at Joann Fabrics for three years and helped so many people pick out fabric and trims and even help them with their sewing questions. Seeing how excited they were about there project made me excited and want to make things that made other people happy."

Janelle: "It’s a funny story. I’ve always wanted to be a fashion designer, but I can’t sew or draw. In college, my initial major was journalism. Newspapers started shifting their dailies and merging with larger corporations, and good journalists were losing their jobs. One day I was watching one of my favorite television shows, Absolutely Fabulous. The main character, Edwina, is a publicist that dealt with celebrity, music and fashion. Just like that, I knew that is what I wanted to do. I changed my major to public relations immediately.

3. City or Suburbs?

Alyssa: "City all the way"

Janelle: "I’m definitely a city girl. I need the police station, hospital, ethnic hair salon and soul food/dive restaurant to be no more than 10 minutes from my house."

4. Favorite ADS Designer so far?

Alyssa: "I cant choose one. I know and see all the dedication and see beauty in everything they make."

Janelle: "Catou by Berny Martin. His looks are classic. His tailoring is flawless. His pieces are timeless and remind me of another Indiana designer, Bill Blass."

5. Your fashion story – how did you become obsessed?

Alyssa: "Growing up in the country fashion didn't really matter to much. People never were seen wearing Gucci sunglasses while moving miles of grass that we called our backyard. But growing up I was always playing dress up and loved all the fabrics and colors. I never followed trends and always had my own style. No matter how much the kids made fun of me I wore what I liked and what I thought was trendy. I took a sewing class in school and found out how good I really was at sewing and life took off from there."

Janelle: "I’m a child of the 80’s. Fashion and self expression was HUGE then. The 80’s were a period when street fashion set the guidelines for what the couture houses would construct. I remember watching Elsa Klentch’s “Style” with my mother and sister. My sister wanted to be a model and I wanted to be a designer. We would rule the fashion empire with our super fashion powers."

6. If you were a piece of vintage clothing what era would you be from and what piece of clothing would you be?

Alyssa: "Eighties Punk! I love all the colors and the grungy leather. I would be an off the shoulder t-shirt its simple but sexy. It never goes out of style."

Janelle: "1950’s black tea length evening dress or Audrey Hepburn’s signature black “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” dress. I look at my elder family member’s vintage photos all the time. Women dressed back then. They put on gloves to go to the store. We’re lazy now. Heck…I’m lazy."

7. Clutch or Messenger?

Alyssa: "Messenger! I have too much stuff for a clutch. I'm always on the go."

Janelle: "Both…depends on the outfit. If it is a formal event, I would carry a clutch. For everyday outings, I’d carry a messenger.

8. Why pursue a career in fashion in Indiana?

Alyssa: "My family is here to support me. And I like the challenge."

Janelle: "There was a time I hated Indianapolis and I wanted to leave. I had the option to move twice, but I never did. Just recently I was convinced that Indianapolis will be my home for good. I established a life; there is no reason for me to leave any longer. The fashion citizens of Indianapolis are making an effort in increasing fashion awareness here in Indianapolis. I want to help build the fashion community from the ground up."

9. Coco Chanel or Elsa Schiaparelli?

Alyssa: "Coco she is classy and sophisticated."

Janelle: "Chanel. Yes Chanel was the mother of women’s sportswear, but she was more than that. She came from nothing and grew against all odds and became one of the most revered women of all time."

10. If we polled all of your friends what would be one word they would use to describe you?

Alyssa: "Quirky"

Janelle: "Just one word…WOW…mmm…unconventional.

11. How long have you lived in Indianapolis?

Alyssa: "Year and a few months"

Janelle: "32 years…all my life."

12. Since so many of our meetings are held at Starbucks what is your favorite gourmet beverage?

Alyssa: "Actually I hate coffee! It's just a good place for business meetings."

Janelle: "Java Chip. Starbucks is made from holy hands; that’s why it’s addicting."

13. Where do you the Indianapolis fashion industry in 5 years?

Alyssa: "I see it being more recognized by people. And I hope to see more designers coming out of the woodwork!"

Janelle: "Indianapolis is a growing city. I hope within five years the city becomes a mecca of Midwest fashion. One day when someone refers to American fashion, Indianapolis will be mentioned with the main cities like New York, Los Angeles and Miami."

14. How in the world did you find us and what attracted you (besides our amazing designers, our sparkling personality, and our bright smile)?

Alyssa: "I heard about you through school and I decided to do some research before I contacted you in the hope of a job! It all worked out according to plan."

Janelle: "I found ADS on twitter and looked at the website to find out what the company did. I thought it would be a great experience to work with such a company. Once I met Julia, I was on board. I hope to grow with ADS and its clients."

15. How do you want to save the world?

Alyssa: "The world cant be saved! But i can try to at least make the people living in it look good!"

Janelle: "If everyone learns to love and take stock in themselves, I think the world would be a happier place. There are so many unhappy people out here; pulling everyone else down into their darkness. When people look in the mirror and like what they see, it builds their esteem and increases the love they have for themselves. I want to help people like what they see when they look in the mirror. That’s kind of a Miss America answer…" (we like it :)

Believe me, we are the lucky ones - to have women who not only are empowered themselves but who also are in this world to help and empower others is simply a sight of grace. There is nothing that stands in our way so watch for us in 2011 - we will be a force to be reckoned with!

The businesses that you see highlighted throughout our pages are independently owned. This means that big-box retailers (while they certainly have their place) are not our focus. Some of the businesses that you see featured carry handcrafted items and some of them are smaller shops which don’t create their own products but exist independently of a corporately-owned chain. We've been "out of the blogging loop" for a while so we're back!

So much has been happening and we have to be able to juggle all things fashion and blog at the same time (kind of along the lines of walking and chewing gum at the same time :) So, here we go.

Friday, October, 22nd was one of the BEST nights of fashion I've been able to witness here in old Indianapolis. Project IMA - Fashion Unbound - the talent there pulled out all the stops and it was an amazing night to remember. THE TASK: to create something phenomenal with recycled materials. THE RESULT: Out of this world!

Here are just a few pics from that awesome night and the talent that we have here - watch out world we're on our way up!!

The Online Lookbook

It's FINALLY complete! I feel as if the world stopped while our lookbook was being put together. But it was worth the wait because I love the way it turned out. Thanks to THE best photographer on the planet, Polina Osherov, the beautiful Michelle Pemberton modeling, and last but definitely NEVER least the incomparable Fashion Stylist Nikki Sutton for the front and back covers of the lookbook. These pictures were taken from the Sweet Revenge Lingerie show called Cabaret Lingerie back in March of this year and the corsets shown in the beginning and the end are available for sale. They are hand done with impeccable precision and workmanship - they are simply a work of art for the body.

Creating a lookbook these days is of the utmost importance! If you are going to talk to anyone intelligently about your business you have to have something to back it up - a lookbook is a good place to start. I decided to start with an online lookbook simply for convenience. I am able to reach important out of town contacts instantly and they are able to see what we have to offer on the spot upon the arrival of an introduction email. There are some appointments (face to face) when I do use our printed lookbook and my clients are given a copy of that to keep. They will also have access to the online lookbook as well for their reference or if they need to send it on to one of their affiliates.

The process was relatively easy to do but it did take a lot of time and effort. Remember when you are putting together anything that has to do with marketing or branding that YOUR name is on the line and it is important that you make a very good first impression. I know your mother always told you to "never judge a book by its cover" and for most situations that does hold true - except for this one. Lookbooks are your clients very first introduction to who you are and what you are about and you need to get it right the first time. Whomever your client may be please know that they are inundated with people trying to sell them things every single day. You have to find a way to set yourself apart and make your brand stand out. Customer service is a HUGE way to set yourself apart but you won't get a chance to offer that part of your business if you don't get a first meeting. The way to a first meeting is a good lookbook.

I'm not only referring to fashion lookbooks here. Photographers, models, artists, designers, interior designers, Marketing/PR businesses, there are many different sects of business that can benefit from a lookbook and an online lookbook is a good place to start for the novice. I count myself in the novice category and I plan to learn and grow every day as well. For now I need to make sure my designers have a presentation that represents them and their brands well and professionally because I am making a first impression for them and that's why I take so much pride in what I do.

Take a look at their view on lookbooks and hopefully you'll get a feel for if an online lookbook is best for you or if you will invest in a printed version - or there's always the combination of both which can only increase your chances of gaining that GREAT first impression!
